Hello,
my name is Juan. I am a salsa DJ, a salsa dance instructor, and (as you may
have guessed) a salsaholic.
I dance salsa "on 2", also known as "mambo" or "New York
style" salsa. Why do I dance salsa this way? Because it's the way that I
was taught.
My
interest in salsa started back in 1994 when I was living in the Bronx. At
that point, I
had a love-hate relationship with the salsa clubs in New York -- I loved going because of the
music, but at the same time I hated going because I didn't know how to
dance!
So one day, I decided to take lessons and picked up a flyer that was at
one of the clubs in the Bronx (Side Street as it was known back then). As luck would have it,
the flyer was for classes with Eddie Torres, who is considered the
"grandfather" of all the salsa teachers in New York.
I soon became addicted and took lessons for three or four years -- 3 or 4 times a
week when I was a serious salsa junkie. I also danced with Eddie Torres'
student company The Eddie Torres Jammers for several months.
After
living in Houston for almost a year in 2002, I returned to New York. I had relocated to Houston because
of a job, and I discovered that hardly anybody there dances on 2! I did dance on 1
while I was there, and
even in New York I will do
so upon request, but when it's a really good song and I'm dancing on I
almost can't help slipping back to the 2... what's a mambo lover to
do? I taught over in Houston for a bit, but not many people were
really interested in learning New York style mambo dancing.
However, I am teaching here in New York
now. Click on the "Classes" button above to find out my teaching style and
what I have to offer. |
